Shock therapy for the disciples of Jesus is taken up another notch. After a full day of teaching and healing, Jesus wraps up the day for them in Capernaum with a trip “to the other side”, a place where no observant Jew would ever consider going to confront a man no Jew would ever have anything to do with. Early in His ministry, Jesus revealed what would come to be called His rescue manifesto. Central to that process is Jesus’ signature brand of compassion, articulated first in His Sermon on the Mount, then at his hometown synagogue in Nazareth. In this teaching session at the First Presbyterian Church in Longview, Texas in 2007, Doug Greenwold examines contextually one of the most paradigm shattering experiences his disciples would encounter as Jesus demonstrates how that compassion is put into practice, establishing a trait that would come to define Christ followers for centuries to come.

In this extract from a 2015 teaching at Trinity Bible Church in Lafayette, Louisiana, Doug Greenwold explains how slavery was integral to the Roman Empire, often the only path to freedom, and how the Apostle Paul capitalized on slavery as well as on other Roman cultural normatives to tailor the foundation of his infant urban Christian church and, moreover, how it applies to us today.

Cómo formar discípulos a la manera de Jesús: sabiduría que hemos desaprovechado es un libro para discípulos y practicantes del discipulado. El propósito del texto es poner a prueba y desafiar nuestros paradigmas occidentales contemporáneos sobre el discipulado y lo que es la formación espiritual, proporcionando el trasfondo del contexto de lo que significaba formar, o como se conoce en los Evangelios “hacer discípulos”. Luego se plantean las siguientes preguntas: ¿Qué estamos haciendo? ¿Por qué lo hacemos así? y ¿qué fruto estamos cosechando (o no estamos cosechando)? La tesis del libro es que, cuando hagamos la reconexión con las presuposiciones contextuales en los Evangelios sobre “formar discípulos” podemos ver con mayor claridad los “ingredientes que faltan” en el discipulado de hoy.

Jesus often taught using parables, as did rabbis generally. It has been said that a parable is an earth-bound story with heavenly implications. So it was with the Parable of the Good Samaritan. While this parable may indeed be widely known and frequently referenced, how well is it really understood? Doug Greenwold digs into the context of this parable in five chapters that explore how Jesus radically challenged the observant Jewish paradigms of the day and now takes aim at our paradigm of, first, who is my neighbor and, second, what it means to be neighborly.
